April with Anita Harrison - Shadow Work (HYBRID)

TIMINGS:

This is a mixed class with an afternoon Zoom session to start with and then one-day in person at the Winchester Quaker Meeting House. You will need to complete the online section of the class before attending the day class. The online class will be recorded.

Online - Sunday 29th March 14:00 -17:00

In Person - Saturday 18th April 10:00 - 16:00

This Lily of the Valley design is worked using Shadow Work technique on sheer silk organza using a mercerised cotton thread.

The embroiderer will learn several skilled steps to complete this finished elegant design. The fun of Shadow Work for this project is that it uses simple stitches (including Fly Stitch, Stem Stitch, Herringbone Stitch and French Knots) worked on one or more layers of sheer organza always with the knowledge that if the thread is carried across the back of the work, it must be done with purpose as it will be visible and form part of the design.

To add to the complexity of the project, some areas of the design are stitched through several layers of sheer silk organza then some layers are trimmed away to create opaque areas of the design, leaving others to remain translucent. This design also includes ‘captured sequins’.

This project requires certain steps to be completed before the next one can begin. To assist the student, an online class (which will be recorded) will be taught several weeks before the in-person class. The cutting away of sheer fabric layers can only be covered during the in-person class if the student has prepared their work by attending the online class or watching the recording.
