This kit is inspired by the beautiful Medieval Floor Tiles in Winchester Cathedral, where some original tiles still exist today.  However, on doing a little research they were an extremely popular choice at the time and are thought to have also existed in many buildings, including Hampton Court Palace.  Sadly, they did not wear well and very few examples survive today. 

The simple motif shapes on these floor tiles lend themselves well to the counted embroidery technique of Blackwork using black threads on white linen to embellish clothing during the Tudor period.  The copper colour for the metalwork applied to the Blackwork motifs was chosen to match the terracotta used for the original tiles.

The stitches used are blackwork with basic metalwork embroidery (Goldwork) techniques including couching, chipping and felt padding. This would be suitable for a Beginner with some experience.

Hoop size and special tools needed
8in hoop.  
Sharp embroidery scissors, and
Sharp pointed embroidery scissors for cutting metal thread.

The cost of the kit will be paid to the tutor on the day and is estimated to be £36.50 . 

(Beeswax will also be available for purchase on the day at £1.50 and a basic velvet board at £2.80.)
